Thinking of Dropping Out?
Thinking of dropping out of your current uni or further education course but don't want to waste the hard effort you've already put in? No problem.
With the OU's credit transfer system, you may be able to count your previous study towards your OU degree. That means you won't have to start your studies from scratch and it will take less time to get your qualification.

Sounds great - how do I qualify?
First off, you need to have successfully completed a higher education course, or part of the course, above A-level, Scottish Highers and Sixth Year Studies, ONC, Abitur, Baccalaureat or equivalent. This might be a degree, foundation degree, HNC/HND or diploma course.

So how does it work?
As long as you can prove you've successfully completed some of your degree, we may give you points in multiples of 5. The OU will award up to 120 points for each year of successfully completed full-time study. So, if you've got a quarter way through your first year, for instance, your previous study could earn you 30 points towards your OU degree. And with six months study you may get 60 points - it’s worth doing.

What's the maximum number of points I can get?
The more of your course you've completed, the more credit transfer points you'll earn. So you could qualify for 120 points if you've done a year, up to a maximum of 240 points, depending on the OU degree course you choose.

Can I claim for more than one period of study? Yes, but we'll assess each separately - you'll need to have covered different content on the courses, for example.

Will my past marks affect my final grade? No, the grade you achieve with your OU degree is based entirely on the marks you get in your OU courses.

Can I count my credit points towards any OU qualification?
There should be an OU qualification that fits in with your past study. But different higher education courses count towards different levels of OU qualification - and you can only transfer credit to Level 1 or 2 courses, not Level 3. The Credit Transfer Centre will let you know if you're eligible for credit and what proof of previous study you need to provide.
