  • Eligibility requirement:
  • Funded by UCL School of Life and Medical Sciences, UCLH/UCL Comprehensive Biomedical Research Centre and the Specialist Biomedical Research Centres at Moorfields/UCL and Great Ormond Street/UCL. Inspired by its Grand Challenges (www.ucl.ac.uk/research/gc), UCL’s ‘Grand Challenge 100’ PhD training programme is designed to attract those researchers with the highest intellectual and scientific skills to the field of biomedical and life sciences. Grand Challenge Studentships, Funded by the UCL School of Life and Medical Sciences and the NIHR Biomedical Research Centres at UCLH, Moorfields and Great Ormond Street Hospitals, will be awarded to those individuals best able to demonstrate their intellectual promise (likely holding an excellent first degree in science, engineering or medicine), an evident capacity for critical thinking, and a desire to address fundamental questions in biomedical and life sciences relevant to human health and wellbeing. The specific focus of these studentships can range from investigations into fundamental aspects of human health and disease or translational approaches to prevention and early disease detection, through to the development of novel therapies and interventions, addressing global health issues such as HIV/AIDS in the context of global politics and economics or the application of mathematical techniques to basic questions in biology and biomedicine. The intention is to encourage outstanding individuals to engage in innovative research across a broad canvas. Grand Challenge Studentships, each funded for 3 years (including a stipend of £18,000 p.a., Home/EU fees and £5000 p.a. research funds), will provide a multi-disciplinary training programme in a highly-supportive environment. Based within one of the high-profile Institutes or Divisions in UCL’s School of Life and Medical Sciences, students will have access to world-class laboratory, field or office research facilities accompanied by regular interactive problem-solving and ‘blue-skies’ sessions in which free thinking and the development of radical solutions to complex problems are actively encouraged (and rewarded). Grand Challenge Students will be encouraged to establish links and collaborations that cut across traditional laboratory, departmental and discipline boundaries, with supervision by UCL’s outstanding basic and clinical research teams. In return, Grand Challenge Students are expected to engage fully with UCL in its commitment to meeting its Grand Challenges.
