Student Loans and Maintenance Grants

Information on the current package of government financial assistance for students can be obtained from the Aim Higher web site at http://www.aimhigher.ac.uk/student_finance/index.cfm
Different regulations apply for students from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and all relevant information is on the web site above.
Student Loans are available to cover all of the fees, and a part of the maintenance costs. In addition, there is an income-assessed maintenance grant for students from lower income households. The latter does not need to be repaid.

In general, you can apply for financial help to cover the cost of your tuition fees if:
  • you are an EU national or a family member of an EU national
  • you have been living within the EEA and Switzerland for the three years immediately before the start of your course
  • your main reason for being in the EEA and Switzerland was not to receive full-time education

As well as finance for tuition fees, you can also apply for help with living costs if all the following apply:

  • you are an EU national yourself (having an EU national parent isn't enough to qualify)
  • you have lived in the UK and Islands for the three years before the start of your course
  • you are living in England, Northern Ireland or Wales at the start of your course (this is 1 September for a course that starts in the autumn)
